President Zardari has decided to appoint Zaka Ashraf  new PCB chief, sources said.


Ijaz Butt, who was appointed chairman of the board on October 8, 2008, continued to work despite expiry of his term and there was no word from the President House regarding his extension till today when Farhatullah Babar, the presidential spokesman, said that Butt had not been asked to continue his office.

Sources said Zaka has also had a meeting with President Zardari, source said, adding that notification of his appointment will soon be issued.

Butt today returned from Dubai where he had gone after the expiry of his term as PCB chief. On his return, he didn’t talk to the media as he had not while flying out.

Reports said that for the appointment of the new chairman, Ali Raza’s name was being considered but later Majid Khan, Zaheer Abbas, Javed Miandad and Zaka Ashraf also emerged as potential aspirants.

Nigeria fail to qualify for Africa Cup of Nations

ABUJA: Nigeria became the latest marquee name to miss out on qualification for the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations on Saturday after they were held to a 2-2 draw by Guinea.

Guinea finished top of Group B with 14 points from six matches, while Nigeria were second on 11 points. In the other match of the group, Ethiopia defeated bottom team Madagascar 4-2.

Two-time champions Nigeria last failed to qualify for the Nations Cup in 1986 when they were eliminated by Zambia.

Defending champions Egypt and four-time winners Cameroon have also failed to qualify for the African football showpiece to be staged in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea in January.

Nigeria suffered a massive setback 10 minutes into the second half when Ismael Bangoura smashed home a rebound after a shot from distance came off the post.

The Super Eagles drew level in the 64th minute when Russia-based striker Obinna Nsofor fired home from inside the box after he was set up by substitute Ahmed Musa.

Nigeria then took the lead in the 71st minute when substitute Ikechukwu Uche shot home after he was set up by an Emmanuel Emenike header from inside the box.

Guinea then got the result they needed five minutes into stoppage time when Traore Ibrahima sneaked in a low shot beyond goalkeeper Dele Aiyenugba. (AFP)

ICC warns Sri Lanka over Galle's 'poor' pitch

COLOMBO: - Sri Lanka's cricket board (SLC) has been officially warned for the "poor" quality of the pitch at Galle, which hosted the first Test in their recent series against Australia, the International Cricket Council (ICC) said on Friday.

The SLC was in line for a sanction after the pitch was criticised as "too dry" by both teams after Australia won the test by 125 runs last month.

"It was clear ... that the amount of turn, especially early in the match, was excessive and there were occasions... where the ball went through the surface of the pitch, bouncing
unusually steeply from a good length," ICC general manager Dave Richardson was quoted as saying in a statement.

"...taking into account that it was the first time that a pitch at Galle has been rated as 'poor', and given the intention of the curator to prepare a pitch that provided a fair balance
between bat and ball, we have decided to impose a warning as the sanction."

The world governing body of the game also directed pitch consultant Andy Atkinson to inspect the ground at the end of this month and recommend necessary corrective measures.

SLC will have to submit a report to the ICC confirming that the corrective actions had been implemented before the staging of the next international match at the venue.(Reuters)

Peterson next up for Khan

Britain's Amir Khan has confirmed that he will defend his WBA and IBF light-welterweight titles against American Lamont Peterson in Washington DC in December. 

Khan defended the belts in Las Vegas against Zab Judah in July and will now take on mandatory IBF challenger Peterson in the United States on December 10.

It will be the third time that Khan has fought Stateside and the contest is expected to be the last time he fights at 140 lbs as he looks to step up to welterweight to set up a mega-fight against unbeaten Floyd Mayweather next summer.

Peterson, 27, has won all but two of his 31 fights, with his only defeat coming against Timothy Bradley in California two years ago.

"I am looking forward to returning to the United States to face a worthy challenger like Lamont Peterson," stated Khan, who has lost just one of his 27 contests.

PCB wants meet with BCCI officials on Indo-Pak cricket

The Pakistan Cricket Board says “everything is in the air” as far as resumption of bilateral series with India is concerned and it does not expect any progress on the issue until the BCCI holds a formal meeting with its officials.

“The truth is right now everything is in the air. And frankly speaking even our policy on resuming bilateral cricket ties with India would only be made once we get a formal invitation from the Indians for a meeting or for next year’s series in India,” PCB chief operating officerSubhan Ahmad said.

Rousing welcome to hockey player

Three days after the Indian hockey team clinched the inaugural Asian Champions Trophy hockey tournament, goal keeper P.R Sreejesh returned home on Wednesday to a rousing reception.

Hundreds of people, including his family members and friends, turned up at the airport to receive and felicitate the player on his landing here by an Air India flight from Delhi at 8.40 p.m.


As soon as the player came out of the terminal, his jubilant supporters began raising deafening cheers and clicking away with their camera phones.

Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi laid to rest at ancestral palace

Former Indian cricket captain Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi, who died of a lung ailment in Delhi on Thursday, was laid to rest at his ancestral palace on Friday with thousands thronging the burial site to pay their last respects leading to chaotic scenes. 

Pataudi, who was 70 when he breathed his last at the Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in Delhi, was buried next to the grave of his father, Iftikhar Ali Khan Pataudi — the last ruling Nawab of Bhopal.
As distraught family members, bid final goodbye to the man who was fondly called ‘Tiger’, there was chaos at the Pataudi Palace’s sprawling campus with close to 15,000 people converging at the burial site to catch a glimpse of the proceedings.

The huge police presence was hardly a deterrent as media and the gathered crowd jostled to be the closest to the grave even as the Pataudi family grieved in silence.
Pataudi’s wife, yesteryears’ Bollywood star Sharmila Tagore, looked calm and composed when she came on the palace balcony once along with other female family members.
Pataudi’s son Saif Ali Khan, also a Bollywood actor, performed the last rites after offering Friday prayers. Saif’s actress girlfriend Kareena Kapoor looked distraught along with Pataudi’s daughters Soha and Saba, both of whom were inconsolable.
